Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the results of the Emerging Economies University Rankings spanning 43 countries across four continents.
Russia has expanded its presence in the rankings table this year. THE notes that this country is the fourth most represented nation in the rankings, with 35 universities ranked – up from 27 previous year. Eighteen of all Russia’s universities featured in this year’s rankings are Project 5-100 participants.
Project 5-100 universities claim nine of the top 100 positions of the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings:
- Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Moscow State University) – 12th place;
- National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute) – 16th place;
- National Research University Higher School of Economics – 22th place;
- National Research Tomsk State University – 49th place;
- National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University – 51th place;
- St.Petersburg Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics University – 53th place;
- Novosibirsk State University – 62th place;
- St.Petersburg Polytechnic University – 87th place;
- Kazan Federal University – 99th place.
Moscow State University (5th) again leads the nation.
Project 5-100 has also three Russia’s leading universities listed in the top 200 best universities: National University of Science and Technology MISIS (104th), Peoples‘ Friendship University of Russia (117th), and Samara University (189th).
Top 300 of the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings includes I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University), Siberian Federal University, Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin, and Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, which has entered this rankings for the first time. Far Eastern Federal University features in the top 400.
Some of Project 5-100 universities have considerably improved their positions over the last year. Peoples‘ Friendship University of Russia has risen from 251-300 band to the 117th position in the list with particular improvements across teaching, citations and international outlook. St.Petersburg Polytechnic University (87th) scales up 18 positions with improvements to research, international outlook scores, citations and industry income pillars. Higher School of Economics climbs 10 places to joint 22nd, St.Petersburg Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics University rises from 57th to 53th and Moscow Engineering Physics Institutehas improved its position by 3 places.
Ellie Bothwell, Global Rankings Editor for THE, notes that Russian institutions now need to focus on attracting international students and staff and collaborating with scholars in other countries to boost their performance further.
THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018 comprises 450 universities from 43 countries classified by FTSE, as advanced emerging, secondary emerging or frontier. The list assesses universities across four continents including Brazil, China, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, etc. The ranking is based on the 13 performance indicators grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research), and industry income (knowledge transfer).
